| I really didn't know much about Compaq
until I bought one in October 1997. It was pretty much top of line stuff then DVD, 300 MhZ
PII etc... Well later at the end of summer 1998 win Win98 came out. I thought it would be
great to to ahead and do a clean install of Win98. WRONG. Compaq did not have compatible
drivers for it's modem, or DVD player. The modem drivers came out on the Win98 CD Thank
God becuase compaq sure would not put them on their useless web site. DVD is still even
today another story. Their DVD player will not work with a clean install of Win98. If you
go the upgrade route from Win95 to Win98 then the DVD is very choppy almost unplayable.
Compaq did not have an attempted solution for theDVD problem even one month after Win98
came out. Ok the funny but sad stuff. I called compaq tech support figuring by now they would have a soultion. I asked the first techie if they had any reported problems with DVD and Win 98. The techie asked "What is a DVD?" I thought for sure this guy was joking. WRONG. The second techie told me DVD was not supported by Win 98. I then had to bust out laughing. So I asked her you mean Compaq DVD or any DVD is not supported by Win 98. She told me any DVD. I knew I had another idiot on the line or Microsoft had a major typo on the Win98 box about supporting DVD. So I got bumped up again to another techie who had a little more sense. He told me compaq's DVD player was not supported by a clean install of Win 98 only by an upgrade. But he also insisted I could not do a clean install with a Win 98 upgrade version becuase it is only for upgrading from Win 95. This story could go on and on but there is still no decent solution to the DVD problem with Compaq Presario 4850 and Win98. I am sure they have good compatible DVD drivers for the new compaqs coming out with Win 98. Why can't I just please have a copy of the DVD drivers. Compaq still says Nope we don't know or care what you are talking about. This story could carry on and on which it already has. But hey, I now told another few or many that COMPAQ SUCKS. |
