Cpu Upgrade Advice & Compaq |
| I have a Presario 2266. After owning the
computer for 3 months (and replaceing the factory internal modem with an external
modem-due to the very poor quality of the factory modem) I decided to upgrade my CPU from
the Cyrix MII 300 to a AMD K6-2 333mhz. I called compaq and requested the jumper setting for the correct speed and VOLTAGE setting..The AMD requires a 2.2 core voltage, much lower than either cyrix or pentium. I didnt get thru to them that day. I was advised of a 10 minute holding time, after 35 minutes I hung up. The next day I got thru and asked my jumper questions. The tech gave me the cpu clk jumper setings, and the front side bus speed settings. I had just done a few weeks research on the web which allowed me to agree with the setting he gave me. Next hegave me the cpu core voltage settings...WRONG! he gave me the "default" voltage setting of 2.9 core volts, more than enough to totally fry my new cpu in a matter of minutes. I politely told him that he must be mistaken, that the jumper assignment he had just given me was the way it was set when i purchased the computer (2.9volt w/cyrix). He said "that cant be!". I just hung up. I don't feel like argueing with the uneducated and obvisouly dumb and unknowledgeable techs. Luckly from my wekks of research (on jumper settings) I had found the correctsettings for my voltage jumpers. What bothers me most, is that if I wasn't me, and say someone (anyone) who didnt happen to know the correct setting before calling in--you would have one DEAD computer thanks to compaq! I had called them merely to make sure i was corect, but it came down to me haveing to trust myself more than them--good thing I did. |
