1255 Laptop Nightmares...

Whatever you do, do NOT buy a Compaq 1255 Laptop. Everything about it is low-end poorly manufactured parts (and I have no doubt they were made overseas), and I may have to purchase a warranty upgrade just to keep it from falling apart in my hands as I pick it up. Which is probably the
idea -- Compaq makes their money from the warranty upgrades, not the computers. First of all, the AC cord shorted out only a few months after I purchased the computer, so I called the tech support and they said the new one was in the mail. ... ... So about a month or two later, I call in and say "What gives?!" Answer: It was never sent. So I eventually get a new one, and I've had it for a few months now... guess what? This one is shorting out a little too! What else?

The CD-ROM drive is a piece of crap, too. Occasionally, it will completely stop working (usually when the computer locks up while reading the disk) and when I start it up again, the CD never reads. This is a clear example of poor manufacturing, because upon closer investigation it appears that the lens does NOT return to the center every time you close the door (as it should), so it ends up being past the data portion of the CD and acts as though the drive is empty. The only way I have to fix it is to nudge the lens back where it should be with a small, pointy object. One last gripe: The battery. Again, the laptop is only a few months old, and already the battery holds no charge; the instant I unplug the AC cord (after being on all night) it tells me to plug it back in then shuts down. If you're buying a laptop, don't get a Compaq!
