I have an HP Pavilion. Got the cryptic message @ POST that I needed to backup my critical files and either hit F1 for Setup, or F2 to continue booting.
After calling HP tech support (call was routed to their India based center) I spoke w. a pleasant sounding enough human phone answering machine. Apparently their knowledge management system was either not working, or non-existent, because the poor punjabi had to put my on hold multiple times to answer my simple questions. No troubleshooting at all (as if there may have been a boot sector virus, or running any additional diagnostics to confirm the message) just a "well, looks like your hard drive is dead, you'll have to replace it, and it's out of the HP warranty." THEN, he proceeds to ask for contact info, for marketing purposes, which was fine.. I had to ask him directly if HP had an 800# for me to order an additional hard drive for the system, which he did give me.
