: Two weeks ago, I got an error message saying there was no hard drive on my system. I keep my virus info up to date, so I had no idea what happened. When I took my hard drive out (Quantum Fireball)I noticed one of the chips had a huge burn spot on it. Sure enough, it is the same one that was mentioned in an earlier message -- I can read TDA524 on it. Interesting. I was just searching the net to see if there was something I could do (ie. order new chip/board?) when I cam
upon this forum.
: Is there anything I can do to recover my info? Maybe the info is OK, just need a new chip or board? Please let me know. Thank you.

OH YA--me too! I bought a NEW Quantum Fireball lct 10 10.2GB OEM version from EGGHEAD.COM about 2 years ago I guess. Was very happy with it until recently when I thought my power supply went. Turns out after looking at the controller card on this hard drive I found out that the same Philips chip TDA5247HT has burnt just like alot of other people who have owned a fireball have complained about. I wonder if one can start a class action lawsuit to get compensation for an obvious manufacturing defect where a proper heatsink should have been installed! I can imagine the dollars lost both for the cost of the drive initially plus the cost in lost data! This sucks.
